Saginaw Spirit News Release
Sault Ste. Marie, ON - The Saginaw Spirit were unable to salvage a point from their three-game weekend, falling Sunday afternoon to the Soo Greyhounds by a score of 7-2 at the GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. St. Louis Blues prospect Tanner Dickinson scored two goals and an assist while Calgary Flames prospect Rory Kerins finished the night with three helpers. The Spirit received goals from Ian Phillips and Cam Baber in the first period.
The Saginaw Spirit would score first for the eight time this season when an elongated stay in the offensive zone resulted in Ian Phillips first OHL goal at 3:32 of the opening period. Phillips scoring chance was created by a patient play at the offensive blue line by Pacey Schlueting, who stickhandled and protected the puck, before giving off to Phillips. Overage forward Dalton Duhart also recorded an assist on Phillip's first of his OHL career. At 10:21, the Hounds answered the early Saginaw push with a goal of their own to tie the game on Ethan Montroy's first of his OHL career. Owen Allard and Caeden Carlisle assisted on Montroy's goal, which was a teddy bear toss goal for the Hounds. 2:30 later, The Greyhounds number one power play went to work and scored their first of three goals with the man advantage on the afternoon. 2020 first round pick Bryce McConnell-Barker was setup on the side of the net by Robert Calisti for his 10th goal of the season. Still, Saginaw continued to fight and Cam Baber tied the game at 16:04 on a quick wrist shot when entering the zone. Sebastien Gervais recorded the lone assist on Baber's seventh goal of the season. The game was tied two all after the first period, with Saginaw scoring two goals on just five shots.
The Spirit's fortune would change beginning in the second period, as at 6:39 Tye Kartye scored the second Greyhounds power play tally and the first of five unanswered goals the Soo would score in the game. At 12:51, Robert Calisti scored his ninth goal of the season on a wrist shot past the glove of Spirit goaltender Andrew Oke. Marco Mignosa added another Soo goal to put the Hounds up 5-2 at 15:30. Soo added another late when Tanner Dickinson scored his first of two goals on the night at 18:53 from Rory Kerins and Jacob Holmes. The four-goal second period gave the Soo a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes.
The four-goal defecit proved to be too tall of a mountain to climb for the Spirit, as they would only generate four shots on goal in the final 20 minutes. Dickinson added his second goal of the goal to the Greyhound onslaught, and the Soo took this game by a final of 7-2. Andrew Oke made 26 saves in the losing effort for the Spirit, who head to Guelph to play the Storm on Friday night, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Erie to play the Otters on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7:05 p.m.
Saginaw returns home on Friday, December 17 to face the Windsor Spitfires. Tickets are on sale not at www.saginawspirit.com, The Saginaw Spirit Store located at 5789 State Street, by phone at (989) 497-7747, or at The Dow Event Center Box Office.
