Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack took a trip to Pennsylvania this weekend for a two game set against the Erie Otters. The Attack held just a two point advantage over the Otters in the Western Conference standings when the night began, and looked to expand their hold on a playoff spot with the first game of the weekend at the Erie Insurance Arena. Mack Guzda got the start for Alan Letang's squad, while Mark Woolley served the final game of his suspension. Daniel Murphy was between the pipes for the home team.
Guzda had to be sharp early coming off his shutout performance against the Sarnia Sting, and he turned away the initial Otters barrage early in the 1st. Eight minutes into the contest, Aidan Dudas made a spin-o-rama pass across the Otters crease where Matthew Struthers found himself in the perfect position to put it home for his 18th of the year and 200th career OHL point. The 1-0 lead wouldn't last long, as Chad Yetman scored in his 5th consecutive game to tie it up with a deflection less than a minute after Owen Sound went ahead. The teams would exchange power play opportunities late in the period, but neither would convert. With thirteen seconds left in the frame, Matthew Struthers hit Maxim Golod in the neutral zone. The refs determined it was a match major for a check to the head. The Attack would kill off the first thirteen seconds but would head to the second period with 4:47 on the major to handle, without Struthers who would miss the rest of the contest.
The Attack penalty kill got to work to start the second period, and effectively killed off the major to Struthers. Nine minutes into the frame however, Golod assisted on Jack Duff's fourth of the season to give the Otters their first lead of the evening. The lead wouldn't last long. Sam Sedley drew a slashing call on the home team, Dudas made another fantastic cross-ice pass to Sergey Popov and he buried his 11th of the year to even things up at two. The Attack were unable to keep the game tied heading into the third and Hayden Fowler added his 16th of the year to give Erie a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period. Shots after 40 were in Erie's advantage, 27-17.
Owen Sound was desperate for a goal to tie things up in the third period, and an early penalty kill didn't help. The special teams were stellar for the visitors tonight as they killed their 5th consecutive disadvantage, including a five minute major. Brady Lyle finally tied the game up shortly before the halfway mark of the period when he squeaked a wrist shot past Murphy to even things up at three apiece. The story of the night was was the Otters immediately responding after Attack goals and Connor Lockhart did just that, notching his 7th of the season less than a minute later to give Erie the lead once again. After Owen Sound killed a late penalty, they had their own opportunity on the power play. Guzda was pulled and the Attack pulled out all the stops looking for the tying goal but Hayden Fowler put it into the empty net for his 2nd of the evening and an insurmountable 5-3 advantage. The Attack would fall to the Otters and end the night tied for 7th in the Western Conference.
The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player was Matt Philip. The Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars Three Stars were Brady Lyle, Chad Yetman and Connor Lockhart.
The Attack are right back in action tomorrow night against the Otters at 7 pm at the Erie Insurance Arena. The game can be heard on 560 CFOS Bear Radio and streamed online at OHLLive.com.
