Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads returned home from a six-game road trip to take on the Peterborough Petes on Friday night.

It was a big test for the Steelheads, who were going up against a tough Peterborough team on Friday, ranking third in the Eastern Conference. The Petes were led by a duo of Toronto Maple Leafs prospects in Semyon Der-Arguchintsev and Nick Robertson, as well as World Junior star Akil Thomas.

The Steelheads got off to a quick start, opening the scoring under a minute into the first. James Hardie found Cole Schwindt open in front of the net, who one-timed a shot past Petes goaltender Tye Austin. No less than two minutes later, it was once again James Hardie who burst in on a breakaway and beat Austin over the shoulder to put the Steelheads up by two. Both teams traded opportunities on the powerplay throughout the rest of the period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Mississauga got off to a great start in the game, taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Peterborough cut the Steelheads lead in half early in the second, as Jack York came in off the rush and lifted a backhander over the shoulder of Kai Edmonds. The Petes had an opportunity to tie the game in the middle of the frame, as Mississauga went to the penalty box for interference, but the Steelheads penalty kill stood strong. Mississauga answered back, as Schwindt forced a Peterborough turnover, picking the corner on Austin increasing the Trout lead to two goals. The Fish were all over the Petes in the second period, outshooting them 11-3, while taking a 3-1 lead into the third period.

Mississauga had a great scoring opportunity to start the third, as Schwindt and Nic Canade came flying down the ice on a 2-on-1, but Austin stood his ground. Suddenly, the Petes were within a goal of tying the game, as Brady Hinz picked up the rebound off a shot from Declan Chisholm and tucked it into an open net to make the score 3-2. The Steelheads responded quickly, as Richard Whittaker found Hardie open in the slot, who wired a laser beam wrister past Austin for his third point of the game. The Petes would not go down without a fight, as Nick Robertson picked up the puck off an offensive zone faceoff and sent a perfectly placed wrist shot past Edmonds to once again cut the Steelheads lead to a goal. The Fish would ultimately hold on for a big win, by a final score of 4-3.

2020 NHL Draft eligible James Hardie had a career night, registering 3 points (2G, 1A) and a +4 rating. Florida Panthers prospect Cole Schwindt scored 2 goals, while Richard Whittaker added 2 assists in helping the Steelheads to victory. With the win and a Sudbury Wolves loss, the Steelheads move back within four points of 1st place in the Central Division and 2nd place in the Eastern Conference.

Following the game, Steelheads forward James Hardie spoke about his strong play "Definitely a lot of confidence right now. Schwindt has been giving me a lot of good passes. I went through a cold stretch at the start of the year, but I've got some scoring touch back, and it's really helping the confidence right now."
