
Atlantic City cruises to 9-1 victory

AUGUSTA, N.J. - *Rory Shortell threw a complete game for Atlantic City, and the offense stroked 15 hits, as the Surf cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Sussex Skyhawks on Saturday evening at Skylands Park.
Shortell gave up just one run on eight hits, while walking one and striking out seven, to pick up his ninth win of the season. Justin Knoff gave up seven runs over five innings and was saddled with his first loss of the year.
William Plaza was four for five, and Joe Burke was three for five with an RBI to lead the Surf offensively. Gil Zayas drove in three runs for Atlantic City.
Already up 3-0 in the top of the sixth, Atlantic City broke the game wide open when Plaza led off the inning with a single, and Brad Thoma and Jason Hurst were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Zayas then drove in Plaza and Thoma with a single to give the Surf a 5-0 lead. Lucas Taylor followed with a single, driving in Hurst with Atlantic City's sixth run. The Surf added two more runs to close out the frame leading 8-0.
Catcher Cliff Panezich blasted a solo home run for Sussex.
Atlantic City and Sussex will play the final game of the three game series at Skylands Park on Sunday at 2 p.m.
