New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Jackals C Matt Lauderdale lifted a bases loaded, sacrifice fly to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning as New Jersey walked off with a 4-3 win over the Brockton Rox on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Jackals SS Bryant Nelson began the ninth with a one-out single, which 1B Juan Tejeda followed with a double to right field to place runners on second and third. After DH Luke Allen was intentionally walked to load the bases, Lauderdale's fly ball to center field enabled Nelson to score without a throw to seal the victory. With Atlantic City's win over Sussex, the Jackals remain 5 ½ games out of the final Can-Am League playoff spot with nine games remaining in the regular season. Lost in the late-inning heroics was a phenomenal start by New Jersey right-hander Michael Vicaro, who had his no-hitter broken up by a two-out single from Brockton RF Denny Abreu. Still, Vicaro turned in his best outing of the season, allowing one unearned run on two hits in seven innings while walking three batters and striking out five. Brockton opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning. CF Josh Womack walked with one out and on a stolen base attempt, Lauderdale's throw bounced into the outfield and enabled Womack to advance to third. A sacrifice fly by C Lee Rubin plated Womack with an unearned run as the Rox took a 1-0 lead which quickly disappeared. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Jackals struck Brockton starter Greg Bunn for three runs gain a 3-1 advantage. Tejeda led off with a walk and Lauderdale was later hit by a pitch before 3B Chris Kelly reached on an error by Brockton SS Dominic Ramos to load the bases with one out. RF Billy Kovatch then singled home Tejeda and Lauderdale and CF Zack Smithlin followed by walking with the bases loaded. The three-run advantage held until the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, Jackals reliever Nick Martin entered for Vicaro and struggled with his command, walking 2B Melvin Falu and Ramos to put runners on first and second with no outs. Closer Rusty Tucker entered and immediately surrendered a triple to Abreu as the Rox tied the game at 3-3. Tucker quickly settled down, striking out three batters in the frame to stop the bleeding. After the Jackals were held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth by Brockton reliever Keith Noe, Tucker stayed on to pitch a scoreless ninth. Lauderdale's walk-off sacrifice fly gave Tucker (3-2) the victory. The loss went to Noe (0-1). The Jackals and Rox conclude their three-game series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey right-hander Tom Atlee (2-4, 4.24 ERA) will get the start against Brockton righty Santos Hernandez (0-1, 4.50 ERA).
