Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The top two seeds in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships and the only two remaining undefeated teams, will meet Friday afternoon at 12:00 PM at Fifth Third Field in Dayton. The top seeded 49ers of UNC Charlotte and the second seeded Fordham Rams both advanced with wins on Thursday. The Xavier Musketeers also advanced in the loser's bracket with an elimination win over the Rhode Island Rams.
Day three of the tournament will once again feature three games of tournament college baseball with an automatic birth in the NCAA tournament on the line. The first game featuring the two undefeated remaining teams in the event top seeded Charlotte and second seeded Fordham begins at 12:00 PM. The second game, which gets underway at 3:30 PM, will pit the third seeded Richmond Spiders and the Xavier Musketeers. The third and final game of the day at 7:00 PM will see the winner of Richmond and Xavier face the loser of the Charlotte and Fordham game.
In the opening game on Thursday, Rhode Island gave top seeded Charlotte everything it wanted and more as the Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead against A-10 pitcher of the year, the 49ers Adam Mills. Charlotte broke the game open with a four run sixth and a seventh run seventh inning to post an 11-1 win. Mills picked up his 13th win of the season, setting a new school record for wins, which he previously held with current New York Mets starter John Maine.
Second seeded Fordham and third seeded Richmond played a hotly contested second game on Thursday, with Fordham picking up a 3-1 win over Richmond to remain undefeated in the tournament. The Rams scored one in the second and added two in the fourth inning and then hung on as Richmond tried to rally late. The Spiders scored one run in the eighth inning and had the chance for a second tally in the frame but had Joe White thrown out at home trying to score on a base hit to center. Fordham hung on in the ninth and remains one of two undefeated teams through two days of the tournament.
The nightcap of day two once again featured the Xavier Musketeers, who rallied to win the third game on day one to advance to action on Thursday. In a rematch of the opening game of the tournament on Thursday afternoon, Xavier faced off against Rhode Island, who picked up a 4-3 win. Musketeer starter Michael Lucas picked a great time for his third career complete game shutout as he blanked the Rams on four hits as Xavier picked up the win in the elimination game by a 3-0 score. Adam Lipski drove in a pair of runs and Robbie Kelley added an RBI as the Musketeers sent the Rams home with their second loss of the tournament.
Tickets for Friday's three game session of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships are available at the Fifth Third Field Box Office, which opens for business at 10:00 AM. The first of three games on Friday begins at 12:00 PM, with the second starting at 3:30 PM and the night cap getting underway at 7:00 PM.
