Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities finished an 11-day homestand with a 3-1 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Thursday night at John O'Donnell Stadium. Southpaw Eddie Romero was dominant for South Bend, carrying a shutout into the eighth inning before the Swing finally found the scoreboard.
Quad Cities (25-21) emerged from the homestand with a 3-6 record, five games behind first-place Beloit as they get set to visit the front-running Snappers for the first time on Friday night. South Bend (21-23) salvaged a series split after winning a game that was decided by the starting pitchers.
Romero (4-1) scattered seven hits over eight strong innings of work, allowing one run while striking out eight and issuing no walks. The left-hander allowed a runner to advance past first base just twice, working around leadoff baserunners on four separate occasions.
Meanwhile, Swing starting pitcher Eddie Degerman (0-1) did not fare as well. The Cardinals' fourth round pick in 2006 entered the ballgame with 26 strikeouts and just three walks over his first four outings with the Swing, but he did not have his best stuff Thursday night. He walked four and fanned four over four innings of work, allowing two solo home runs and three hits.
He issued two of his four walks in the first inning but battled back to strand the bases loaded.
The Silver Hawks got to him in the second, however, when Shea McFeely launched a one-out bomb deep to left that cleared the berm. One inning later it was Brad Miller doing the damage, belting his eighth home run of the year to give South Bend the 2-0 lead.
That was plenty for Romero, who sailed into the bottom of the eighth before Luke Gorsett split the gap in right-center for a one-out double. There were two away when pinch-hitter Jared Schweitzer singled through the left side, scoring Gorsett for Quad Cities' only run.
