Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 24, 2007) - Joe Dickerson's straight steal of home in the fourth inning highlighted a five-stolen base night to help the Burlington Bees (19-25) to a 3-2 win over the Great Lakes Loons (19-26) at Community Field tonight. Dickerson led the way with three stolen bases overall and scored two of the Bees' runs. The win gives the Bees a split of this four-game series and a 4-4 mark on this home stand.
The starting pitchers came out firing tonight as Bees' starter Harold Mozingo didn't allow a hit until two outs in the fourth and Loons' starter Clayton Kershaw struck out four of the first seven he faced before Jase Turner looped a single to short left with one out in the bottom of the third for the game's first hit. Turner moved to second on a passed ball and was there with two outs when Derrick Robinson hit a bounding ball to the right side. Kershaw, the seventh overall pick in last year's draft, was late going over to cover first and Robinson legged out an infield single. Even with no play, Loons' first baseman Eduardo Perez threw to Kershaw near first and when the ball went off of Kershaw's glove for an error, Turner was able to come in and score to get the Bees on the board. Kershaw committed a balk and walked two more before getting out of the inning to make that run earned against him. Dickerson led off the fourth with a single, stole second, and when the throw from catcher Kenley Jansen went into centerfield, he advanced all the way to third. Kershaw struck out the next two batters and went back to the wind-up with Turner at the plate. With Kershaw in the wind-up and Turner a left-handed batter, everything was in line for the straight steal of home for the Bees' second run. It was the Bees' first straight steal of home since June 13, 2000 when Spencer Oborn darted in against the Ft. Wayne Wizards. Kershaw (4-2) came out after four innings and got the loss.
The Bees added their final tally against reliever Doug Brooks in the sixth. Dickerson drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a Kurt Mertins single to right-center field. Mertins also stole second in the inning, but was stranded. Brooks allowed just the one run on one hit over three innings in relief. Miguel Ramirez allowed a hit and a walk in the eighth.
Mozingo (3-5) worked through 5.2 innings and allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five. The win snaps a streak of four straight losing decisions over his last five starts. Aaron Hartsock replaced him with a man on in the sixth and stranded the runner while working an inning and a third. Tyler Chambliss finished the final two innings for his second save, but the Loons made him work for it. In the top of the ninth, Josh Bell singled and scored on a double by Preston Mattingly. After a walk to Justin Fuller, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and a walk to Jansen loaded the bases with no outs. Chambliss then struck out Bridger Hunt. Matt Berezay brought in Mattingly with a sacrifice fly to center to get the Loons to within one, but Chambliss closed out the game by fanning Adolfo Gonzalez. Chambliss is the first Bees' pitcher to record a second save this year.
The Bees continue this home stand against the Clinton LumberKings tomorrow night at 7:00. RH Josh Cribb (1-2, 4.45) will start for the Bees against LH Mike Ballard (5-3, 4.60) for Clinton. The gates will open at 6:00 for Sponsor Appreciation Night and a Fireworks Friday sponsored by Budweiser, J&M Displays, Hot 97 Dot 3, and Big Country 103.1. The game will also be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
