ATLANTA - Atlanta United put on a dominant performance in a 5-2 win against Inter Miami CF Saturday night in front of 71,635 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Goals from Tristan Muyumba, Brooks Lennon, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Tyler Wolff and an own-goal helped Atlanta United secure a crucial home win in a tight Eastern Conference race to the playoffs with five matches remaining.
Atlanta looked dangerous early and outpaced Miami in shots 4-1 through the first 25 minutes, but it was the visitor's who broke the deadlock. Dixon Arroyo struck the woodwork with a shot from distance that bounced to Leonardo Campana in the center of the box. The striker quickly took a touch, lifting the ball over the Atlanta defense before finishing from close range to give Miami a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Atlanta then took over the match and scored three goals in an eight minute span to close the half. It began with an equalizer in the 36th minute through Muyumba. The play started with Edwin Mosquera playing a through ball for Lennon toward the end line where he crossed it at the near post. Muyumba flicked a header on goal which hit the back post and narrowly crossed the line before Drake Callender could palm it out of the goal. After video review, the goal was upheld and Muyumba was credited with his first Atlanta United tally while Lennon and Mosquera each picked up an assist.
Five minutes later, Atlanta took the lead. Xande Silva received the ball on the left wing and slowly backed his defender down while dribbling into the box. The Portuguese winger cut the ball on his left foot near the end line and sent a cross intended for Giakoumakis inside the six-yard box, but Kamal Miller stepped in front and turned it into his own goal for a 2-1 Atlanta lead.
Atlanta doubled its advantage in the 44th minute. The play started from Atlanta's backline as Luis Abram delivered a pass to Silva in the middle of the field. Silva passed to Caleb Wiley in space on the left wing where the Homegrown dribbled down the field before finding Lennon unmarked drifting into the box. Lennon took one touch before firing a shot into the left side of goal. It was his fourth goal of the season.
Miami, however, earned a penalty in the 52nd minute when Abram was called for a handball and shown a yellow card. Campana scored the spot kick, placing it to the bottom left corner and cutting the lead to 3-2.
Giakoumakis restored Atlanta's two-goal lead in the 76th minute. Silva gained possession on the left wing and played Almada in the middle of the field where the Argentine led a counterattack. Almada passed the ball to Lobjanidze on the right wing and he delivered a perfectly-weighted ball to Giakoumakis inside the box where he smashed home his MLS-leading 14th goal of the season. It was also Lobjanidze's first assist for Atlanta.
Wolff tacked on a fifth goal in the 89th minute after a hustle play from Lobjanidze. The Georgian lost possession after a heavy touch in the midfield but pressed Miller and immediately re-gained the ball with an interception. With Lobjanidze one-on-one with Miller, he found Wolff making an underlapping run on the right side. The Homegrown shot the ball first time, rattling the underside of the crossbar and into the goal to ice the match.
Atlanta United (12-8-9, 45 points) returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 20 when it travels to face D.C. United at Audi Field at 7:30 p.m ET (MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
