Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United defeated CF Montreal 1-0 Saturday night at Stade Saputo. Brooks Lennon scored his third goal of the season and the team kept its sixth clean sheet to earn its second road victory of the year.
Coming off a 2-0 victory on Sunday against Philadelphia, Atlanta put in another strong defensive performance, holding its opponent to just one shot on target in back-to-back games for the first time in club history.
Atlanta opened the scoring in the 54th minute through Lennon. After drawing a foul about 25 yards from goal, Thiago Almada struck the ensuing free kick off the right post where the rebound fell to Lennon who tapped the ball into the net for his third goal of the season. The goal marked the first time Lennon has scored in back-to-back matches in his career.
Lennon nearly scored in the 34th minute as Almada lobbed a ball over Montreal's backline to find Atlanta's right back making a run into the box. He brought the ball down with one touch before firing a shot from a tight angle just wide of the far post.
Almada had a chance to add Atlanta's second goal in stoppage time as he received the ball near midfield and dribbled towards goal. He attempted to round the goalkeeper, however Jonathan Sirois was able to recover and block the Argentine's shot.
Atlanta United (9-5-8, 35 points) returns to action when it travels to face New England Revolution on Wednesday, July 12 at Gillette Stadium (7:30 p.m. EDT, MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
