Atlanta United 2 News Release
KENNESAW, Ga. - Atlanta United 2 defeated Indy Eleven 6-2 Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. With six goals scored, it was the most goals scored in a match in team history. Tyler Wolff scored a hat trick and registered an assist, which was the first hat trick for an ATL UTD 2 player since August of 2019. Additionally, Darwin Matheus, Amadou Macky Diop and David Mejia each netted a goal of their own en route to the big win at home.
The Homegrown forward wasted no time opening the scoring in the first six minutes of the match. Off the opening kickoff, the ball made its way back to goalkeeper Eric Dick where he took a heavy touch that Wolff pounced on and deflected into goal. It was the quickest goal in team history at 12 seconds. Then in the sixth minute, the Braselton, Georgia native doubled Atlanta's lead. ATL UTD 2 took advantage of a transition off an Indy turnover near the middle of the field. Chris Allan found an open Matheus, who slipped a ball to Wolff in the box, where he finished a right-footed shot at the near post.
In the 40th minute, Ben Lundgaard was called into action when Manuel Arteaga volleyed a cross down to the bottom right corner, but the six-foot-five goalkeeper denied the shot and held it clean.
Wolff completed his hat trick in the 50th minute. The 18-year-old intercepted the Indy goalkeeper's pass at the top of the eighteen-yard box. Wolff calmly cut it back to his left foot and buried his shot on the open net.
Indy found a goal in the 51st minute when Nick Moon drove across the box and fired a low shot, just out of the reach of Lundgaard.
Matheus joined the scoresheet in the 53rd minute. The Venezuelan forward played a ball out wide to Caleb Wiley, who took a touch and served a bending ball into the box. Matheus rose up and flicked the ball with his head into the back of the net. Five minutes later, Macky Diop also scored from a header, but this time off a corner kick from Wolff.
In the 61st minute, Peter-Lee Vassell netted Indy's second goal as he gathered the ball from a rebound and fired a shot that found its way into goal from a deflection.
Mejia capped off the night with Atlanta's sixth goal in stoppage time. Phillip Goodrum found the Academy product in open space in the final third. Mejia took advantage of no one stepping to him and ripped a shot from 20-yards out that bounced past the goalkeeper and into the goal. ATL UTD 2 finished the match with 28 total shots with 13 shots on target, which are both team records.
ATL UTD 2 (5-7-6, 21 points) will return to action against OKC Energy FC on August 11 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium (ESPN+, 7:30 p.m. ET).
