HIDALGO, Texas-
Stanley Asumnu scored a game-high 27 points off the bench as the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (4-4) beat the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (1-6) 127-99 tonight at Dodge Arena.
Asumnu hit 13 of his 19 shots while totaling eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
The two teams started by trading baskets, but while the Vipers spread out their offense, Cory Underwood scored the Thunderbirds' first nine points. He was no match for the duo of Trent Strickland and Asumnu, though, who combined for 21 first-quarter points.
Strickland continued his hot-play in the second quarter, again scoring 11 points and combining with Alpha Bangura, who scored eight points in the frame, to give the Vipers a 68-43 half-time advantage, their largest of the season.
Strickland went onto score 25 points on 9-12 shooting with six rebounds.
Alpha Bangura scored 12 of his 20 points in the second half, helping to negate Will Conroy's monster second half, in which he scored 19 of his 27 points.
