Bakersfield Jam News Release
EL SEGUNDO, CA - Jamaal Brown's baseline jumper with 0.9 seconds remaining fell inches short as the Bakersfield Jam edged out the Los Angeles D-Fenders for the 87-86 victory at STAPLES Center, Sunday afternoon.
Bakersfield won their league leading eighth game of the season behind their floor general Mateen Cleaves, who ended the night with game-highs in both points (19) and assists (9).
"We got an open look," said D-Fenders head coach Dan Panaggio. "it just didn't go down for us."
With 17 lead changes and eight ties in the game, both teams knew the game would come down to the last shot. D-Fenders newly-acquired guard Cheyne Gadson failed to convert on a three-point play with 14.5 ticks left in regulation, but Brown was able to grab his eighth offensive rebound on the missed free throw to give the D-Fenders one more chance.
Jam forward Trey Johnson netted 18 points, while Golde State Warriors assignees DeMarcus Nelson and Richard Hendrix ended the night with 12 and eight points, respectively. Hendrix led all players with 16 rebounds.
Los Angeles (2-5) was led by Dwayne Mitchell, who filled the stats sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Brown finished the night with 14 rebounds and six points. Gadson came off the bench to score 17 points in the loss.
"(Gadson) is fitting in well with the team," added Panaggio. "He still has some things to smooth out, but we're working on it. We have a good feeling about it."
The D-Fenders will host the Idaho Stampede on Tuesday afternoon; tip-off is scheduled for 3:30pm at STAPLES Center. Bakersfield will travel to Utah for a West Division matchup Friday night.
