Asheville Tourists News Release
CHARLESTON - The Asheville Tourists outplayed the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday night but needed 11 innings to pick up their second straight road win. Asheville plated the go-head run in the top of the 11th and defeated Charleston 4-3.
Antonio Santos was brilliant for Asheville. The starting pitcher allowed only three base-runners through 7.2 innings. Santos retired 23 of the 26 batters he faced. The Tourists never trailed in the game. Chad Spanberger's two-run Home Run in the third inning began the scoring.
After Charleston used a lead-off triple in the bottom of the third followed by a sacrifice fly, Asheville answered with another run in the fourth. The game remained 3-1 until Steven Sensley hit a solo Home Run off Santos in the seventh.
In the eighth, Charleston used Asheville's only error of the game to tie the game. With two outs and the tying run at second, Carlos Vidal's groundball was mishandled and the RiverDogs leveled the score.
After the Tourists failed to score in the top of the tenth, Tommy Doyle kept the RiverDogs from walking-off with a shut-down bottom half. Taylor Snyder's sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th put Asheville in front and once again Doyle slammed the door shut in the bottom half.
With the tying run at third and one out, Doyle recorded a strikeout and a pop out to end the game. Casey Golden and Ramon Marcelino both made excellent catches in the extra frames.
The Tourists outhit the RiverDogs 10-3 and Charleston committed four errors in the contest. It is the second straight game Asheville has limited their opponent to only three hits.
