Artiles dominant in first start for WhiteWings

Laredo - Marking his first start for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, Carlos Artiles (2-0) pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two to beat the Laredo Broncos 8-2 tonight at Veterans Field.

The WhiteWings (22-23) got on the board right away against Tano Tijerina (1-3). Agustin Septimo led off with a single and Joaquin Rodriguez followed with a double. Rico Santana hit a RBI-single, and one out later, Welinson Baez hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

The Broncos (15-30) got one run back against Artiles in the bottom of the first as Luis Ugueto hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out double by Argelis Nunez.

Brian Nichols hit his sixth home run of the season in the top of the third to make it 3-1.

In the fifth, Sandy DeLeon hit a leadoff single and Septimo followed with a four-pitch walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Santana hit a two-run single to make it 5-1.

Nichols and Baez led off the eighth with singles to knock out Tijerina. One out later, Juan Cabrera singled to load the bases. With two outs, DeLeon walked to force in a run and Septimo hit a two-run single to make it 8-1.

The Broncos got one back in the eighth. With one out, Ugueto doubled and scored on a two-out single by Mario Mendez to make it 8-2.

The WhiteWings Broncos play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:35. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (4-3) is expected to face right-handed pitcher Jeff Jamnik (0-0).

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo.
