San Angelo Reaches Longest Win Streak, 5 Straight
Amarillo, Texas---The first place San Angelo Colts (32-13) were able to gain even further separation from the second place Dillas (24-21) pushing their lead to eight games in the United League standings defeating Amarillo 2-1 in the first game of their four game series.
In the top of the first inning, Ronnie Gaines singled to center field, the line drive was mishandled by the center fielder Keanon Simon, Gaines scampered to second base. Jason Diaz sacrificed his at bat with a bunt. With one away, Bryan Frichter grounded to short stop scoring Gaines. San Angelo led 1-0. The Colts are 21-5 when they got on the board first.
In a 1-0 contest, San Angelo added another in the third. With one out in the frame, Diaz tripled to left field, his second of the season. With one away, Frichter lifted a line drive to center field deep enough to score Diaz. Colts lead went to two runs.
San Angelo starter Ezequiel Astacio did not relinquish a run until the fourth inning. A two out hit by Trent Lockwood brought home Carlos Figueroa making it a 2-1 game.
Astacio was removed in the sixth inning with nobody out and a runner at second base. Pitching coach Matt Duff handed the ball over to Doug Brandt. The left hander delivered, getting the next three outs. Brett Lester and Tom Martin shut down the Dillas in the seventh and eighth inning without allowing a baserunner. That set up a save opportunity for the ninth.
Chace Vacek entered the bottom of the ninth inning working with just a one run lead. In a 2-1 ball game, Vacek gave up a leadoff single. That runner was erased quickly as Vacek induced a 6-4-3 groundball off the bat of cleanup hitter Terrance McLain. Sam McLain grounded out to end the game as the Colts won their fifth straight game, all five have been by just a run.
Ezequiel Astacio (6-1) worked five innings, scattering five hits allowing just a run. Chace Vacek grabbed his eighth save, second best in the United League. The loss falls on Ralph Roberts (4-2), who went 8.1 innings giving up two runs.
The Colts offense managed eight hits and two runs. Ronnie Gaines added a triple and a double including a run scored. Jason Landreth collected two singles.
