Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (May 22, 2007) - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-2) started their midweek series with the Fort Worth Cats (4-7) with a 12-3 win in front of 2,301 at The Birdcage on Tuesday night. The Canaries were led by Abner Arroyo, who went 5-for-5 with two homers, a double, and seven RBI.
In the third inning, the Canaries took advantage of some Cats errors to score three runs. Angelo Fermin reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced on an error by Cats' second baseman, Kip Harkrider. Trevor Lawhorn followed with a ground ball to Cats' third baseman Terrence Green. Green threw the ball away, allowing Lawhorn reach second base and Fermin to score, giving the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Arroyo then hit his first homer of the night, a two run shot to give the Canaries a 3-0 lead.
In the home half of the fifth, the Canaries tacked on two more runs. Fermin reached on a fielder's choice, then stole second base. James Shanks walked to fill first base, and Arroyo doubled to right field, driving in both Fermin and Shanks putting the Canaries ahead 5-0.
Chuck Carter homered in the sixth to get Fort Worth on the scoreboard, 5-1.
Fort Worth crept closer in the seventh inning, when they scored two on a fielding error by Canaries centerfielder James Shanks, to bring the score to 5-3.
The Canaries took those two runs right back in the bottom of the seventh with back to back home runs by Lawhorn and Arroyo. Lawhorn's league-leading fourth of the season and Arroyo's second of the night spread the lead to 7-3.
Canaries batted through the order in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Fermin, Shanks, Lawhorn, and Arroyo strung together four straight singles, each driving in a run, and Arroyo bringing home a pair. The five eighth inning runs provided the 12-3 final.
Jeff Landing (3-0) pitched seven innings for the Birds allowing three runs on seven hits. Joel Kirsten (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Kris Regas pitched the last two innings for the Canaries retiring all six batters he faced, two via strikeouts.
The Canaries and Cats play the second of their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The night will be "Teacher Appreciation Night" presented by Billion Toyota and Granite City Brewery. All Sioux Falls, Brandon, Tea, and Harrisburg Public School Teachers will receive a voucher for two tickets to Wednesday's game, paid for by Billion Toyota and Granite City Brewery.
