Around the Horn: M-Braves Keep the Faith in Wild Fourteen-Frame Game

August 15, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

It took eight innings for the Blue Wahoos to warm up, but they made their hits count with a two-run rally setting up an extra-inning duel against the Mississippi Braves. After the sixteen-inning marathon on Saturday, Pensacola stretched their second bout with the M-Braves to fourteen innings and kept it close to the bitter end. Mississippi was the first on the board following a controversial call at the plate, allowing Tommy La Stella to score from second base after an errant tag by Tucker Barnhart. After both squads traded zeros, Josh Fellhauer broke the game open with a two-run double off the wall in left field, but Mississippi made things interesting when La Stella bashed a solo shot into Pensacola Bay. Nearly ninety minutes later, Drew Hayes uncorked a wild pitch to allow the go-ahead run to score in the form of Greg Golson. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:

600,000 STRONG: The Blue Wahoos welcomed their 600,000th fan through the gates of Pensacola Bayfront Stadium on Faith Night, headlined by former major league standout Bernie Carbo. Daryl Wise was awarded two tickets to a New Orleans Saints game, a prize pack with gift certificates to local business establishments, and a gift selection from the team store.

STRONG STARTS: Tim Crabbe was sharp in his six-inning start, striking out a season-high nine batters in the effort. The Wahoos starter and Southern League All-Star tied a team high while allowing just one run and walking three batters. Mississippi's Gus Schlosser also nabbed a quality start with six shutout innings, limiting Pensacola to just one hit in his no-decision.

WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE: Christian Bethancourt continues to set M-Braves history as a double in the seventh inning improved his on-base streak to forty games. The catcher, twice named Baseball America's top defensive catcher in the Atlanta organization, also extended his hitting streak to a season-high sixteen games.

BACK AT HOME: Josh Fellhauer stroked his second double in as many nights with his eighth-inning knock, plating Ray Chang and Theo Bowe in the process. The outfielder extended his hitting streak to ten games between Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville, including five extra-base hits and six RBI.

The Wahoos (25-26) send Josh Smith (9-8, 3.60 ERA) to the hill and look to gain ground on the M-Braves with a victory tomorrow. The first pitch is tabbed for 7:00 PM with gates opening at 6:00 PM on ThirstyThursday, presented by Seville Quarter. Entertainer Myron Noodleman will also make an appearance tomorrow night.
