Rain Soaked Night Ends in 2-0 Suns Loss

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns could not push a run across in the continuation of Wednesday's suspended game against the Birmingham Barons, falling by a final score of 2-0 in game two of a five-game series.

Cody Puckett's sixth inning, two-run home run off Grant Dayton proved to be the difference in a game marked by two hour-plus long rain delays that forced the suspension of a scheduled seven-inning contest that was to follow the Suns' 2-0 loss.

"It was just a weird night," said Suns manager Andy Barkett following the loss. "Our bullpen did a nice job. Dayton did a nice job, but made one mistake and [Puckett] hit it over the fence."

Both teams were scoreless through the first five innings, the first two and half of which were played Wednesday night before a heavy rain storm forced the contest's suspension. While Jacksonville continued to languish at the plate, Puckett launched his 12th home run and fifth against the Suns to give the Barons all the runs they would need.

"Hopefully we'll just write this off as a weird day at the office," Barkett said. "We'll come back ready to go tomorrow and play two ballgames."

Kevin Vance earned his seventh save for Birmingham with two scoreless innings in relief of David Cakes (1-0).

The Suns and Barons will play a doubleheader, with each game lasting seven innings, on Friday for games three and four of the five-game set. Pitching matchups have not yet been determined for the twin bill, which will begin at 6:05 p.m. ET.
