Norfolk Tides News Release
Eddie Gamboa and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Tides blanked the Buffalo Bisons 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
After allowing two hits and a walk in the first frame, Gamboa (2-1) rebounded to retire 16 of the next 17 batters he faced to help Norfolk complete the three-game sweep. He walked two and struck out six over six innings of work, throwing 58 of his 87 pitches for strikes to lift Norfolk (17-13) to its fourth consecutive win.
Cesar Cabral and Pedro Beato followed Gamboa and combined for three shutout innings of relief, with Beato recording the final five outs for his first save of the season.
It was the second consecutive 1-0 shutout win for the Tides, who lowered their IL-leading staff ERA to 2.50 this season. Norfolk now has six shutouts this season, surpassing the five shutouts registered over the entire 2014 campaign.
The Tides plated the only run of the contest in the sixth inning, as Julio Borbon led off the frame with a double down the left field line that was misplayed by Chris Dickerson, allowing Borbon to move to third. Rey Navarro, making his first appearance with the Tides since being optioned from Baltimore, followed with a sacrifice fly to give Norfolk the only run it would need.
Chris Parmelee continued his hot hitting as he singled twice to raise his average to .339. Parmelee, who entered play tied for second in the IL with 19 RBI, has now reached base safely in 17 consecutive contests.
The Tides welcome the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to Harbor Park on Monday night for the start of a three-game set. UVA product Tyler Wilson (1-4, 3.58) makes the start for Norfolk against right-hander Bryan Mitchell (2-2, 2.59), with first pitch slated for 6:35.
Notes: The game was delayed by rain for 21 minutes in the top of the eighth inning...The contest was Norfolk's fourth straight one-run affair, and the Tides have now seen 15 of their last 20 games decided by one run...With a sixth inning single, Christian Walker has now hit safely in nine of his last ten games, over which he's batted .375 (15-40)...Nolan Reimold and Audry Perez both had two hits in the contest...The three-game sweep was Norfolk's second of the season.
