Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (5/10/2015) The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the third game of a three-game series to the Durham Bulls, 5-1, on Mother's DaySunday. Chiefs starter A.J. Cole started out slow, allowing three runs in the first two innings before settling in. Third baseman Ian Stewart had the Chiefs' only run, a solo home run in the seventh inning.
After losing on Saturday on a walk-off walk, Durham (19-12) got right on the board against the Chiefs and Cole on Mother's Day. Second baseman Taylor Motter led off the game with a double to center. Cole struck out shortstop Nick Franklin looking, but then gave up a two-run home run to the right fielder Mikie Mahtook to left-center field to give the Bulls an early 2-0 lead.
The scoring would continue for Durham when the Bulls came back up in the top of the second inning to face Cole again. First baseman Allan Dykstra led off the inning with a solo home run to right field, just his third hit of the season and second home run of the year, putting Durham up 3-0.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the next four innings as neither team was able to put a run across, and only one runner from either team reached as far as second base. In the top of the seventh, Bulls designated hitter J.P. Arencibia led off with a solo home run to left field to put Durham up 4-0. Arencibia's home run came off Syracuse reliever Eric Fornataro, who came in to relieve Cole at the start of the inning.
Syracuse (12-18) finally put its first run on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jhan Mariñez came in to relieve Durham starter Enny Romero in the sixth inning, but didn't allow a runner on base until the seventh. Mariñez surrendered a one-out solo home run to right field to Stewart, closing the gap to 4-1. The long ball marked Stewart's sixth of the year, and put him in sole possession of the most home runs for a Chief this season.
The Bulls put up one more run in the top of the ninth off of Rich Hill, who came in to relieve Fornataro at the start of the inning. After getting center fielder Corey Brown to line out to right to start the inning, Hill hit Arencibia before striking out Dykstra. Hill then hit catcher Luke Maile with a pitch, putting runners on first and second with two outs. The next batter, left fielder Eugenio Velez, hit a hard ground ball to Stewart at third, who could not cleanly field it, loading the bases with two away. Third baseman Vince Belnome followed the infield error by Stewart with an infield hit to Stewart, driving in Arencibia and sealing the Bulls' lead at 5-1.
The Chiefs will head out of town for a week-long road trip on Monday, first playing the Gwinnett Braves and then traveling up to Charlotte to take on the Knights. Right-hander Scott McGregor will take the mound for the Chiefs in their first game of the road trip against right-hander Chien-Ming Wang of the Braves. The game is set to start at 6:35 p.m.
