Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SATURDAY AFTERNOON LIVE: The RailRiders defeated the Indians yesterday, 2-1. SWB's third win in four games gave it the series victory as well.
ONE-RUN FUN: Indianapolis entered the series with the most one-run wins in the league along with the most such contests. But the RailRiders have taken each of the series' first two games by a single score and have won each of their last four one-run games. At 7-3 (.700), SWB boasts the loop's second-best winning percentage in single-score contests behind only Pawtucket's 6-2 mark (.750).
THAT WAS EASY: The RailRiders played their fastest nine-inning game of the season at a slim 1:58. It was the quickest nine-inning home game for SWB since April 18, 2012 when a 2-0 win over Rochester took 1:54. While technically an SWB home contest, it came during the team's vagabond season without a home park and actually took place in Rochester. Saturday proved to be SWB's shortest nine-inning true home game in the Yankees era. It was the most efficient nine-inning home game for SWB since the then-Red Barons beat Pawtucket 3-0 on Aug. 26, 2005 in a lightning-quick 1:50. That PawSox team had Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis and Kelly Shoppach in its starting lineup that was held to six hits. The Red Barons had Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste in their nine.
BROOM READY: The RailRiders bid for a three-game sweep of an Indianapolis team that entered the series as the first-place team in the West, but begins today pacing Columbus by just a half-game. SWB swept the Tribe in a four-game set at PNC Field last year, but similarly played close contests. Each of the first two games in that series was decided by one run while game three was a 3-1 final.
YOU KNEW HE WAS DUE: Starter Jaron Long (1-2) got his first Triple-A win with six innings of one-run ball. A scoring change after the game turned Jose Tabata's fourth-inning single into a Kyle Roller throwing error and made the lone run he allowed unearned. He needed just 77 pitches (50 strikes) to navigate six frames. Long led the Yankees' farm in wins (12) and ERA (2.18) a year ago.
BULLISH 'PEN: Jacob Lindgren and Nick Rumbelow combined to strike out six men over three scoreless innings behind Long. Lindgren faced the minimum over his two frames while Rumbelow logged his third save. Rumbelow has whiffed 24 men against three walks in 15.1 IP (14.1/9IP). He ranks fourth among IL relievers in K/9IP. Right behind him sits Lindgren at 12.6 (20K in 14.1IP).
GOT HEEM: With Long on the slab and Austin Romine behind the plate, the RailRiders nabbed Gustavo Nunez on a fourth-inning pick off and caught him trying to steal third base in the sixth. SWB has caught three men trying to steal in the last two games to double its season-long total. Those efforts have lifted the RailRiders out of the league's caught-stealing basement. SWB has now taken care of six would-be base stealers in 44 tries (.136). Both Buffalo (.133) and Charlotte (.118) now own worse efficiencies.
WINNING WAYS: The RailRiders are .500 for the first time since concluding last homestand at 9-9. The last winning SWB record was 1-0. The 2014 team's final taste of the air above sea level came after a 7-4 win over Toledo on June 9, 2014. That SWB team then lost five in a row and never got back over .500.
DEATH, TAXES, HEATHCOTT: Slade Heathcott singled, walked and scored each of the RailRiders' two runs on Saturday. He also secured his team-leading fifth steal. He leads the team with 12 multi-hit games and owns a squad-best five multi-RBI showings. His 37 hits on the season have him tied for fourth in the league with Lehigh Valley's Brian Bogusevic. Since he suffered an 0-for-6 night in the 15-inning game against the IronPigs on April 20, Heathcott has gone 26-for-65 (.400/.473/.477/.950) to lift his season-long batting average by nearly 100 points (.234-.330). The usual leadoff man paces the team with 15 RBIs.
