Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Springfield Armor (15-13) roared out of the gate to a 38-12 lead after one quarter and never looked back in a 117-99 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce (7-21) tonight inside the MassMutual Center.
One night after picking up a wire-to-wire victory over the Skyforce, the Armor played arguably their best quarter of the season in the first, shooting 14-23 (.623) from the field and holding Sioux Falls to 4-20 (.20). Jerry Smith led the early charge for Springfield, scoring 14 first-quarter points, grabbing 4 rebounds and handing out 3 assists.
The Skyforce, who only dressed eight players tonight, were down to seven midway through the second quarter after forward Charles Garcia picked up his second technical foul of the evening and was ejected. The Armor stretched the lead to as many as 29 points in the second and cruised into halftime with a 65-37 lead, the Armor's largest halftime advantage of the season. Smith (19 points), Lance Hurdle (13 points) and Dennis Horner (11 points) all scored in double figures in the opening half.
Although the Armor pushed the lead to a game-high 32 points at the 9:11 mark of the third quarter, the Skyforce methodically chipped away at the advantage and outscored the Armor 31-23 in the period to cut the deficit to 88-68.
In the fourth, the Skyforce hung tough despite being undermanned and got within 16 points late, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Armor rolled to their fourth win in their last five games.
For the second consecutive night, Smith was tremendous for the Armor, posting his second straight double-double and third of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Smith added 5 assists and 3 steals to his final line. Horner registered a double-double of his own with 17 points and 11 rebounds, one night after being plagued by foul trouble and failing to score. Hurdle added 22 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists off the Armor bench and JamesOn Curry helped out with 13 points and 6 assists.
The Armor pounded Sioux Falls on the glass, out-rebounding the Skyforce 48-28 and posting 20 second chance points to Sioux Falls' 5.
The Armor will return to action on Thursday when they host the Texas Legends for the first time in franchise history at 7:00 PM inside the MassMutual Center. The Armor will host the Legends again on Saturday, Feb. 11.
