Springfield Armor News Release
Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Armor, presented by MGM Springfield, fell to the Canton Charge 90-81 at the MassMutual Center tonight.
The Charge (9-8) used a hot-shooting first quarter to take control of the game, with Canton knocking down 12-of-18 shots (66.7%) to seize a 32-15 advantage. Seven Charge players scored in the period, led by Kyle Gibson's 11 points.
Canton opened up its largest lead of the game (21 points) midway through the second quarter. A late push by the Armor (4-9) trimmed the deficit to 14, 57-43, by halftime. The Charge buried 11-of-17 from the field (64.7%) in the second and connected on 23-of-35 (65.7%) combined in the first two quarters. Dennis Horner, who made his 2012-13 NBA D-League season debut tonight, and Willie Reed, combined to score 21 of Springfield's 28 second-quarter points off the bench.
In the second half, the Armor consistently trailed by double digits and only managed to cut the lead to single digits for the first time since late in the first quarter on a Reed basket with 10 seconds to go in the game. The Armor outscored Canton 38-33 in the second half and held the Charge to 12-of-31 shooting (38.7%), but it wasn't enough to overcome tonight's slow start.
Horner led four Armor players in double figures with 15 points and five rebounds. Carleton Scott tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Reed contributed 14 points off the bench and James Mays chipped in 13 points in his return from a three-game absence due to a bout with the flu. Christian Polk also added a game-high and season-high seven assists.
Gibson led the Charge with a game-high 16 points, Cleveland Cavaliers assignee Jon Leuer notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, JaJuan Johnson added 13 points and eight rebounds, Jorge Gutierrez scored 11 points and handed out five assists and Dominique Johnson recorded 10 points on the evening.
The Armor will return to action Saturday night when they host the Erie BayHawks at 7:00 pm at the MassMutual Center for the team's annual 'Paint it Pink' breast cancer awareness game, presented by Big Y.
