Armas Called Up to Mets; Vargas Returns

Metairie, LA - The New York Mets have called up right-handed starting pitcher Tony Armas, and right-hander Claudio Vargas has cleared waivers and will rejoin the New Orleans Zephyrs, it was announced Tuesday.

Armas, 30, was leading the Pacific Coast League in several categories, including ERA (2.54), innings pitched (102.2), and WHIP (1.02), and ranked third with 88 strikeouts. He made 10 consecutive quality starts from April 25-June 13, and did not allow more than three runs in any of his first 14 starts.

Armas is scheduled to start the Mets' game Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 30-year-old Vargas pitched in 11 games, including four starts, for the Mets after being called up from New Orleans on May 13. He was 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 37.0 innings.

Vargas signed a minor league contract with the Mets after losing out on a roster spot with the Brewers out of spring training, and joined the Zephyrs for two starts in May, including an outing where he pitched seven shutout innings and limited Fresno to four hits on May 8.
