Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - The 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts enter their 2005 season this Saturday, June 25 at the Rogers Centre as they face off against the B.C. Lions. The teams last met at the Grey Cup game in Ottawa when the Double Blue squashed the Lions, 27-19. Now, the Lions will have to stand by and watch the Argos hoist the Championship banner in a special pre-game ceremony at 6:45 p.m.
The pre-game festivities begin early with the Steelback Streetfest starting at 3:00 p.m. on Bremner St. on the south side of the Rogers Centre. The party will feature fun for the whole family including current Argos, as well as alumni, the Blue Thunder Cheerleaders, the Grey Cup, music, barbequed hamburgers and hot dogs, balloonists, face-painters, a National Sports football toss, magicians, giveaways and Cedar Springs water. Following the Streetfest, the pre-game carnival will continue as outdoor entertainment will surround the Rogers Centre. The official pre-game party will take place at Jack Astor's, 144 Front St. W. After enjoying specialty menu items, Argo fans can watch musical acts perform at Gates 4, 5, 6, 11 and 13 while Sony Playstation 2 will be set up at Gate 2.
The first 20,000 fans at the game will receive a replica of the Grey Cup banner. The theme of the game focuses around the concept of "team", the principle that guided the Argos to their Grey Cup victory. Entitled "Team Tyme", over 200 amateur sports teams will be attending the game, with the tickets being provided by the Argonauts and Scotiabank in an effort to motivate children and encourage teamwork. The "Team Tyme" initiative has been sponsored by Scotiabank and Scotiabank's newest credit card rewards program, the ScotiaStar Network.
Fans of the Boatmen should make sure they are in their seats by 6:45 p.m. In addition to the spectacular pre-game ceremony, including the unveiling of the Championship banner, there will be a ceremonial ring presentation and a reflection of the historical importance of the Argo franchise. Joe Brandt, Senior Vice-President, Scotiabank, will be participating in the opening game's ceremonial coin toss accompanied by minor athletes from the Richmond Hill Soccer Club.
Following the game, the festivities continue as the Argonauts will continue the See You On The Field promotion initiated last season. This promotion allows fans down on the field after the game to meet their favourite Argo players, cheerleaders and the newest member of the Argo team, Jason the mascot. As well, the official Steelback Post Game Party will be hosted at Forget About It, 325 King Street West, immediately following the game.
The 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003.
