
Argos ink draft pick and NFL first rounder

Toronto, ON â The Toronto Argonauts are pleased to announce that they have signed former NFL first round draft pick R. Jay Soward and their final draft pick from the 2004 Canadian College Draft Brendan Mahoney. Mahoney led the CIS in several receiving categories in 2003 accumulating 11 receptions in two separate contests. R. Jay Soward was taken in the 1st Round of the 2000 NFL Entry Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars and is best known for his blazing speed.
Commented Toronto Argonauts Director of Player Personnel Greg Mohns, "We are extremely excited that R. Jay is joining the Argonauts organization. He was a highly productive receiver and return specialist in college, making him the #1 draft choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars. We are looking forward to R. Jay resurrecting his professional career and reaching his outstanding potential at training camp. With Soward's 4.35 clocking, it adds another weapon to the Argonauts' speed arsenal."
Training Camp officially opens on Sunday, May 23 with the first practices of the veterans. The Rookies, however, will arrive tomorrow â Wednesday, May 19, practicing on both Thursday and Friday of this week. Reminder that all media and fans are invited to watch practices held at the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

Mahoney was the Argos' 5th pick, 6th Round (48th Overall), in the 2004 Canadian College Draft. One of the most exciting players in the CIS, the SFU Criminology major was named a CIS All-Canadian after leading Canada West in catches (69), reception yards (1344), yards per catch (19.5), receiving yards per game (122) and touchdown receptions (13). He was second in Canada West in all-purpose yards (1621-yards) during the regular season and caught 11 passes in a game (both times versus Regina)

(Rodney) Jay Soward, who's 40-yard time was recently clocked at 4.35 seconds, was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1st Round (29 Overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. While in Florida he dressed for 13 games grabbing 14 passes for 154 yards. A dynamo at USC, R-Jay still ranks third on the Trojan's all-time kickoff return chart (1,178 yards) and eighth on its career pass catching list (110 grabs). The USC legend scored 27 touchdowns (19 receiving, 3 kickoff return, 2 punt return) during his tenure, remarkably averaging a score for every seven catches.
