Argos add another offensive weapon with Jimmy Oliver

Toronto Argonauts News Release

Just days after the return of All-Star running back Michael Jenkins from the NFL, the Argos added another key piece to their offensive plans for the 2003 season with the signing of free-agent wide receiver Jimmy Oliver today. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Oliver enjoyed a breakout season with the expansion Ottawa Renegades in 2002, leading the team with 82 catches for 1,004 yards and six touchdowns, good for eighth place in the league's standings.

"Going into the off-season, one of our main priorities was to improve our offensive production," said Argos head coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons. "Jimmy Oliver is going to play a big role in helping us put points on the board."

The 5'10", 182-pound Oliver was originally drafted by the NFL's San Diego Chargers in the 2nd round of the 1995 NFL Draft after a stellar four-year career at Texas Christian University where he starred in both football and track. In 1998, Oliver recorded one of the fastest 40-yard sprint times in Dallas Cowboy history when he posted a time of 4.15 seconds at the Cowboys' training camp.

Oliver joined the CFL in 1999 as a free-agent with the B.C. Lions. After three seasons with the Lions, he was selected by the Ottawa Renegades in the 2002 CFL Expansion Draft.

Oliver joins fellow CFL veteran receivers Tyree Davis and Farwan Zubedi as free-agent signings with the Argos this off-season. The team also acquired WR Tony Miles from Hamilton in the trade for Defensive Lineman Joe Montford on March 13th.

"We are excited about the talent we have competing at all positions when training camp kicks off in May," said Clemons. "And we know that our offense is in tremendous hands with new Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Adam Rita."

The Toronto Argonauts, North America's oldest professional football team, celebrate their 130th anniversary in 2003 with 14 Grey Cup championships to their credit, the most in Canadian Football League history. For Argo ticket information call (416) 545-1777.
