Argonauts Draft Pick Returns to School

Toronto Argonauts News Release

Mississauga - Toronto Argonauts' first round pick in the 2013 CFL Draft, Matt Sewell, has made a decision to return to school and pursue an opportunity for his accelerated MBA at DeGroote Business School at McMaster University.

On the decision, General Manager Jim Barker commented, "Matt is a very bright and talented young man and this is a terrific opportunity for him to become an even more well-rounded individual. He has one chance to pursue a special accelerated MBA program this year, and we fully support him in his decision. When we drafted Matt, we didn't expect him to report to our training camp this season but we will continue to keep him in our team's long-term plans. Matt has also informed us that, concurrent with his education, he plans to play out his final year of eligibility at McMaster University."

Matt Sewell remarked, "I very recently received my final grades from McMaster and I found out I had a one-time opportunity to apply for a one-year accelerated MBA program. The prospect of completing a Master's degree in the next eight months so that I can then focus all of my efforts on my future as a professional football player was too good to pass up. I want to thank Jim Barker and the Argonauts organization for supporting me in this decision, and I look forward to reporting to training camp in 2014."

Sewell, an offensive lineman born in Milton, Ontario, spent four years at McMaster University and was selected by the Argonauts with the eighth overall pick in the 2013 CFL Draft. He impressed scouts at the 2013 CFL Combine with 17 bench press reps, 5.45 40-yard dash, and a 28-inch vertical. Last year, Sewell started seven games with the Marauders and was named 1st Team OUA and 2nd team CIS. He was also a runner-up for the Hec Crighton award as the Most Valuable Player in the CIS in 2012.
