Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club would like to congratulate DB Kenny Wheaton and DE Eric England for being named CFL Defensive Player of the Week and CFL Lineman of the Week respectively.
Toronto's defence was outstanding against the Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium and Kenny's contribution was extraordinary. Wheaton's tight coverage held Edmonton's strong pass offence in check. The third year veteran recorded 9 defensive tackles and 1 special teams tackle. His 10 total tackles led both teams and set a personal single-game career high. This marks the second time in his career (2003) that Wheaton has earned CFL Defensive Player of the Week honours.
CFL Player of the Week Judge Ellison Kelly was impressed by Wheaton's football instincts: "Wheaton was very quick to make the tackle after completed passes. He recognized receivers routes and was quick to react, jumping into the coverage. He was constantly in the right place to make the tackle."
Eric England handed in one of the most complete defensive performances on the field against Edmonton. His team leading fourth QB sack, and 3 tackles stunned the Eskimos front line and put pressure on Ricky Ray. England's quick interception at the line of scrimmage stopped a late opposition drive. This is the second time in his career (2003) that England has been named the CFL's Lineman of the Week.
Ellison Kelly saw England bring his game to a higher level: "Eric played a high-energy, high-intensity game and made things happen especially on his pass rush. England's power and quickness helped him collapse the pocket and pressure the quarterback."
QB Damon Allen earned 1st runner-up honours for CFL Offensive Player of the Week and LB Ray Mariuz earned 2nd runner-up honours for CFL Special Teams Player of the Week.
