Boise Hawks News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Mario Yepez singled over the head of Pin-Chieh Chen with two out in the bottom of the tenth inning, scoring Nathan Melendres with the game-winner, helping the Everett Aquasox top the Boise Hawks, 5-4, at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The win improved the Aquasox to 2-0 in extra inning games, while Boise fell in extras for the first time this season.
Pinch hitter Jabari Blash led off the tenth with a walk, with pinch runner Melendres stealing second. After a two-out walk to Marcus Littlewood, Yepez hit a 1-2 breaking ball to center, over the head of Chen, who was playing shallow to cut off a play at the plate.
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third, as Rafael Lopez blooped an RBI double, followed by a run-scoring single from Paul Hoilman. Boise would extend the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a leadoff homer by Chen, his first as a professional.
Everett would make it 3-1 in the fifth, as Patrick Brady scored on a wild pitch, but Boise would get the run back in the sixth on an RBI single from Blair Springfield. However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Aquasox tied the score as Littlewood scored on a wild pitch, Jharmidy DeJesus lifted a sacrifice fly, and Ramon Morla blooped the game-knotting single to right.
Ben Wells took a no-hitter into the fifth for the Hawks, going a season-high five and one-thirds innings, striking out a career-high six. Kyler Burke allowed just one hit in three-plus innings of relief. Chen and Hoilman each had two hits in the loss.
Jordan Pries tossed four and a third innings of hitless relief for his first professional win for Everett, with Yepez logging two of the Aquasox seven hits.
Game 3 of the series is tomorrow night, with Yao-Lin Wang getting the start for the Hawks against Everett righty Stephen Kohlscheen at 8:05 p.m. (MT).
