APPLESOX BREAK FROM LEAGUE ACTION WITH SAN FRANCISCO

Seals In Town For 2 Game Set

The San Francisco Seals are in town for a 2-game set starting Saturday (8/3) at 7:05pm. San Francisco is a non-league opponent and thus the games will have no bearing on WCL standings. The Seals represent the second non-league team that the AppleSox have played this season. The first of such teams was the Everett Merchants who came to town June 8th-9th.

If the name San Francisco Seals has a familiar ring, it comes with good reason. The Seals were a minor league baseball team in San Francisco that played and participated in the Pacific Coast League from 1903-1957. In 1957 the club moved to Arizona to help cut down on travel costs. Some of baseball's greatest players from that era passed through the Seals organization, which for many years was affiliated with the Yankees. All three of the DiMaggio brothers (Joe, Dominic, and Vince) played for the Seals.

Abel Alcantar brought the Seals back to life in 1985. One of the highlights of the organization occurred in 1994 when several of the Seals players were selected to attend Division I and II colleges and universities. The 1994 team was so impressive that the Seals now compete against teams from some of the top summer collegiate leagues in the nation including the West Coast League. In 1997, after winning the San Diego tournament, the Seals participated in the prestigious National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas, the largest amateur sporting event in the country.

Saturday's game is brought to you by the Wenatchee Humane Society. The first pitch is at 7:05, so come out to the ballpark and cheer on the AppleSox while supporting a good cause.

THE RACE IS ON

Teams Duking It Out For Coveted Playoff Spots

With only 6 remaining league games the WCL's North division remains gridlocked in one of the most intense battles in league history. Currently 1 game separates the top 3 teams in the North. Wenatchee holds a half game edge over Walla Walla, and a 1 game lead over Bellingham. Only the top 2 teams in each division advance to the playoffs, meaning that someone is going to be left on the outside looking in. Although Wenatchee holds the lead and is in control of their own destiny, it's the AppleSox who have their backs against the wall. The Bells already hold a tiebreaker over Wenatchee, and Thursday's game would have determined the winner of the Wenatchee Walla Walla tiebreaker. A makeup game with Walla Walla is in the works, but with only a few days remaining in the season scheduling the contest remains as the greatest hurdle.
