Medford Rogues News Release
LONGVIEW, WA - The Medford Rogues extended their winning streak to seven tonight with a 4-3 win over the Cowlitz Black Bears at Story Field in Longview. The win, combined with a Bend Elks loss, brings the Rogues to within 2 Ãâý games of the WCL South playoffs with five league games to play.
After four innings of shutout ball for both starting pitchers, Cowlitz starter Zane Bambush (1-1) gave up a home run to Rogues catcher Bo Cornish, then loaded the bases with an error and two walks. Bambush hit LF Ryan Degner to drive in the second run of the game.
Rogues starter Christian Coronado (1-0), in his first pitching appearance with Medford, delivered a stellar performance, going five innings of two-run ball. He scattered seven hits and struck out five before being relieved by Brandon Williams, who allowed the second run on a wild pitch before ending the sixth with two strikeouts. Williams went three innings, giving up one hit and striking out six Black Bears including three in the eighth inning. Chase Tokunaga gave up a run in the ninth but finished the game to pick up his first save of the season.
Cowlitz cut the score in half in the fifth on the strength of doubles by Ryan Aguliar and Devyn Bolasky to make the score 2-1 through five. The Rogues answered the run with an RBI single by 3B Parker Miles to extend the lead to 3-1. An RBI single from OF Danny McNabb in the seventh brought the score to 4-2.
With the win the Rogues move to 27-22 and are guaranteed to finish with at least a .500 record. The previous record for wins by a WCL expansion team is 19, set by the 2011 Klamath Falls Gems.
The two teams meet Saturday night in game two of the three-game series. Game time is 6:35 p.m. at Story Field on the campus of Lower Columbia CC in Longview.
