Medford Rogues News Release
BELLINGHAM, WA - The Medford Rogues inched closer to a WCL playoff berth tonight with a 10-6 win over the Bellingham Bells, sweeping the three-game series in Bellingham. The Rogues (26-22) took their fourth series sweep in their last five series and are now 12-3 in their last 15 games and are 3 Ãâý games out of the second WCL playoff berth with six league games to play.
The Bells took a 1-0 lead in the first with a Johnny Sewald single and stolen base, followed by a wild pitch and passed ball.
In the second, the Rogues loaded the bases against Bells starter Chris Van Dyke. Catcher Jake Bailey threw the ball into center field, allowing Jared Casper to tie the score at one. Van Dyke then walked Ray McIntire to re-load the bases for Medford. Spencer Smith then hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam over the left field fence, to give the Rogues a 5-1 lead.
The third spelled doom for Rogues SP Mason Stidham as he walked the first two Bellingham batters. Dillon Keene relieved Stidham and was greeted by Bells a three-run home run by 3B Alex Calbick to make the score 5-4.
The Rogues kept their foot on the gas with two more in the fourth off Bells reliever Jake Ehret. A leadoff home run by Joe Chavez, and an RBI double by Smith put Medford up by three, chasing Ehret in favor of John Albert for the Bells. In the ninth, Casper hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the year, to put the game away at 10-4.
Keene (2-3) steadied the ship for the Rogues after Calbick's blast as he picked up the win, going five innings before giving way to Casper in the eighth. A two-run homer by Johnny Farrington off Hector Lujan in the ninth moved Bellingham to 10-6 but Lujan finished the Bells off to end the game. Van Dyke (1-2) took the loss for the Bells.
Smith finished 3-5 with five RBI to lead the Rogues, while Casper and Chavez had two hits each, and Casper added three RBI to the total.
The Rogues take the WCL's longest current winning streak (six) with them as they travel to Longview, Washington to take on the Cowlitz Black Bears for a three-game series beginning Friday. Game one is at 7:35 p.m.
