Antero Niittymaki Loaned to Crunch

Syracuse, NY (February 7, 2012) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the San Jose Sharks have loaned goaltender Antero Niittymaki to the Syracuse Crunch.

Niittymaki, 31, has played five games for the Worcester Sharks this season with a 2-3-0-0 record. In 2010-11, Niittymaki posted a 12-7-3 record with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .896 save percentage for the San Jose Sharks. In 234 career NHL games with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and San Jose, he collected a 95-86-31 record with a 2.95 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and five shutouts. The Turku, Finland, native has also appeared in 152 career AHL contests with a 73-58-12 record.

Niittymaki won a Calder Cup and was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy (AHL Playoff MVP) with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2004-05. Additionally, Niittymaki was named MVP and Best Goaltender, while playing for silver medalist Finland, during the 2006 Olympic Games.

Niittymaki will join the team on the road when the Crunch face the Connecticut Whale on February 7. The team returns home to host the Hershey Bears on February 10 and the Albany Devils on February 11 at the War Memorial Arena.
