Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC- A sacrifice fly by Francisco Arcia in the bottom of the ninth scored Ali Castillo with the winning run as the Charleston RiverDogs walked off with a 5-4 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 2,141 fans. The RiverDogs (21-8) remain in first place in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division, while Delmarva dropped to 14-16 with the loss.
The rally in the ninth started when Kelvin De Leon led off the inning against pitcher Jose Nivar (0-3) by lining a double into the right field corner. After Castillo pinch-ran for De Leon, Mason Williams was intentionally walked and Cito Culver was unintentionally walked, loading the bases and giving Arcia a chance to win the game. Joel De La Cruz (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
The game began the same way it ended, with drama and intrigue, as the RiverDogs faced highly touted prospect Dylan Bundy, who started the game for the Shorebirds. Bundy ended up being outdueled by Charleston's Scottie Allen. In six innings of work, Allen allowed just three hits and one unearned run. He struck out a season-high six and walked one. The only run Delmarva got against him came when Brenden Webb doubled in the fifth and scored on an error by Casey Stevenson.
Bundy looked sharp in three innings of work, striking out eight, but Charleston did have some success against him. In the first inning, Gary Sanchez doubled, becoming the first runner to reach second against Bundy this season. Although Bundy escaped that inning, the RiverDogs pushed across an unearned run against him in the third. With two outs, Mason Williams struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. With Cito Culver batting, catcher Gabriel Lino's throw back to Bundy was wild and went into center field. When Williams tried to advance to third on the play, the throw by the center fielder went out of play, allowing him to score.
The RiverDogs pushed across two more runs in the fifth, when a Stevenson single scored Angelo Gumbs (2-4, run, 2 SB) and Gary Sanchez (3-4, 2 RBI) singled later in the inning to score Stevenson.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the seventh, the Shorebirds scored three times against reliever Wilton Rodriguez. A Connor Narron two-run homer over the right field wall capped the rally and made the score 4-3. Mason Williams almost single-handedly tied the game for Charleston in the bottom of the inning when he walked, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a single by Sanchez.
BALLPARK FUN: The RiverDogs hosted their second Dogs With A Cause night of the season, supporting SC Advocates for Epilepsy. The Ashley View Pub had beers for $1 on Hair of the Dog Monday.
COMING UP: The RiverDogs finish up their seven-game homestand on Wednesday night when they send out RHP Will Oliver (1-2, 3.04 ERA) against Shorebirds lefty Tim Berry (1-4, 3.47 ERA). Star 99.7 is sponsoring Two-for-Tuesday, with buy-one, get-one ticket specials at the stadium box office. The team will be celebrating Nursing Week with Nurses Appreciation Night. Also, Sweetwater 420 and Blue Moon beers will be available on the concourse, as it will be Craft Beer Tap Tuesday.
