ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants rode a five-run, two-out rally in the fifth inning to a 6-2 victory over the St. Paul Saints on Thursday night.
Beau Torbert and Trevor Lawhorn each hit two-run home runs in the frame to give the Pheasants a 5-2 lead. The pair of dingers gave the Pheasants 97 homers for the season, breaking their own two-year-old league record of 96.
The fifth inning should have never been but for Eddy Rodriguez reaching on a fielding error by third baseman Josh Petersen to lead off. Joe Anthonsen reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. After Tim Hutting flied out to center, Kevin Carby cracked the first of his two run-scoring singles. That cut the Saints lead to 2-1 before the Torbert followed with the first two-run blast. All five runs were unearned.
Carby replaced Reggie Abercrombie, who was hit on the left hand by a pitch from Saints starter Jason Godin in the first inning. Carby was 2-for-4 with two RBI. He brought in his second run in the eighth to stretch the Pheasants' lead to 6-2.
Brandon Sing was 4-for-5 with three doubles and a run scored, and Anthonsen also collected two hits.
Pheasants starter Ryan Rodriguez (8-4) tossed seven innings for the win, allowing just two runs and six hits. He walked four and struck out three. The defense partnered with Rodriguez, a ground-ball pitcher, for three double plays. Godin (6-3) took the loss, allowing five runs - all unearned - on eight hits in six innings. He walked none and struck out six.
Aaron Cotter entered in the bottom of the ninth with two on and one out. He struck out the final two batters to earn his 18th save. He is tied with Lincoln's Chris Thompson for the league lead.
Game three of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, July 30. The game broadcast will be carried live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
