Wingnuts Add Major League Bopper

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts announced two major player acquisitions on Thursday, signing former Major League first baseman Carlos Rivera and trading for veteran infielder Cesar Suarez.

Rivera played 85 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003 and 2004 and is currently in his 14th season of professional baseball. The 32-year old hit .373 with 16 home runs and 82 RBI in 104 games this summer for the Mexican League's Petroleros de Minatitlan. A native of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Rivera has hit a combined .380 with 52 home runs and 234 RBI in 300 games during three seasons in the Mexican League since 2007. The left-handed hitting slugger also spent four years of his career playing in Triple-A for the Pirates, Astros, and Rockies. The Pirates originally drafted Rivera in the 10th round in 1996.

Suarez arrives from the Fort Worth Cats in exchange for infielder Jose Duran. Suarez hit .273 in 19 games for the Cats after opening the season in the Los Angeles Dodgers' organization. Now in his ninth year of professional baseball, Suarez entered 2010 with more hits (668) than games played (651) in his career. The Maracaibo, VZ native reached Double-A last season with the Tampa Bay Rays' organization. Suarez is expected to play second base for the Wingnuts.

The Wingnuts also activated shortstop Josh Horn from the Disabled List. Horn has not played since July 18th at Sioux Falls when he suffered an injury to his left ankle.

To make room on the roster, the Wingnuts traded outfielder Eric Williams to the Sioux City Explorers for a player to be named later. Wichita also released designated hitter Mario Delgado. Rivera and Suarez are expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Wingnuts open a four-game series at Pensacola.
