Arkansas Travelers News Release
Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR â LHP Clayton Andrews (1-0) and RHP Aaron Pullin (3) combined on a two-hit shutout as the Arkansas Travelers (31-29) blanked the Tulsa Drillers (36-24), 3-0. Making his first Class AA start in three years went the first seven innings limiting the Drillers to two hits while pitching around five walks with six strikeouts. Only two Tulsa batters reached base against Andrews after the second inning. Pullin threw the last two innings without allowing a hit for the save. He pitched around three walks with two strikeouts to close out the Travs fourth shutout of the season. 2B Alberto Callaspo and 3B Greg Porter each collected three base hits with Porter knocking in two runs. After dropping five straight games to the Drillers, the Travs have pulled out two consecutive wins to pull within five games of Tulsa with ten games left in the first half.
The Drillers best chance to score came in the first inning as Jayson Nix singled with one out and Andrews walked two hitters. Tulsa 3B Corey Slavik popped out to end the inning.
After allowing a two-out single and a walk in the second inning, Andrews set down ten batters in a row.
Tulsa starter RHP Jon Asahina (7-3) allowed three hits, but no runs in the first three innings. Callaspo got things started in the fourth inning with a leadoff single to center. Travs SS Erick Aybar then lined a single to center with Callaspo going to third base and Aybar following him into second on the throw. On a grounder hit by Mike Napoli, Callaspo was thrown out at home with Aybar advancing to third base. Arkansas CF Tommy Murphy then lifted a sacrifice fly to center bringing Aybar home with Napoli tagging up for second base. A passed ball put Napoli at third base and he scored when Porter lined a double to the right-center field wall.
The Travelers turned two double plays behind Andrews in the sixth and seventh innings. After Ryan Spillborghs broke his streak of ten batters set down with a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, Sean Barker grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Then after a one-out walk to Gustavo Escobar in the eighth inning, Andrews struck out Aaron McNeal with Napoli pegging Escobar at second base on an attempted steal.
With one out in the eighth inning, Callaspo collected his third single then was forced out at second base on Aybar's fielder's choice. Napoli then singled to center and Murphy drew walk to load the bases. Porter then rifled a line shot that was stopped by Slavik at third base, but Porter beat the throw forcing Aybar in for a 3-0 lead.
Pullin tossed a shutout eighth inning, then walked two hitters in the ninth before striking out Escobar and coaxing PH Tino Sanchez into a game-ending groundout.
Time of game was 2:24 and the paid attendance was 2,323.
