The Wichita Wranglers got another strong pitching performance from Derrin Ebert, as they defeated the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 4-2 on Thursday night at Hammons Field.
Ebert (3-1) won his second game against the Cardinals this year, working 6.2 innings while allowing just two runs on six hits. The left-hander surrendered two runs in the first two innings, but threw scoreless ball the rest of the way. The Wichita bullpen used three men to shut the Cards down over the final 2.1 innings.
Papo Bolivar earned a leadoff walk in the ninth against Barry Armitage. With one out, Andy Schutzenhofer singled after left-hander Nate Hoelscher was summoned out of the Wichita bullpen. With runners at first and second, pinch hitter Cody Haerther struck out swinging for the second out of the inning. The Wranglers used Jonah Bayliss for the second time in the series, bringing him in to face Shaun Boyd. Boyd grounded out to third baseman Brennan King, giving Bayliss his second save of the series, and third of the year.
The Wranglers got a run in the first off Cards starter Randy Leek (6-3), as Brennan King's RBI single plated John Draper.
Tyler Minges cracked his tenth homer of the year, smacking one off the foul pole down the left field line, tying the game at 1-1. The Cards took a 2-1 lead in the second, as Andy Schutzenhofer picked up an RBI double, knocking in Travis Hanson, who opened the inning with a walk. Schutzenhofer finished the night with three hits in four at-bats.
The Wranglers took the lead for good, scoring three times in the third against Leek. Cory Aldridge's two-out RBI single tied the game at 2-2. Mike Aviles followed with his seventh homer of the year, a two-run blast into the Wichita bullpen, giving the Wranglers a 4-2 lead.
