Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals are back over the .500 mark, after beating the Wichita Wranglers by a final score of 7-6 in 12 innings on Wednesday night at Hammons Field.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Shaun Boyd's hard ground ball got past Wichita first baseman Justin Huber, scoring Cody Haerther with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th. For the Cardinals, they improve to 30-29 and are just six games back of the Tulsa Drillers in the East Division.

With the Cardinals leading 5-3 in the top of the ninth, Justin Huber lined a pitch from Evan Rust over the right field wall, a three-run blast to give the Wranglers a 6-5 lead. For Huber, the homer was his eighth of the year.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals rallied with two outs. Travis Hanson's infield single started the threat. Robinson Cancel then walked to bring Andy Schutzenhofer to the plate. Inserted into the game defensively at first base in the top of the ninth, Schutzenhofer doubled down the left field line, plating Hanson from second to tie the game at 6-6. On the play, Robinson Cancel was thrown out at home for the final out of the inning.

In the tenth, Anthony Ferrari got into trouble, but escaped by leaving the bases loaded. In the bottom of the inning, Cody Haerther nearly won it for the Cards. With Papo Bolivar at first base and one out, Haerther drove a ball to the wall in center field that center fielder Mitch Maier caught with a leaping grab up against the wall.

In the 11th, Papo Bolivar made a game-saving catch in left field. With runners at first and second and only one out, Bolivar made a diving catch in the gap, taking an extra base hit away from Mike Aviles. Anthony Rawson would work his way out of the 11th, leaving the bases loaded. Rawson (3-2) worked a 1-2-3 12th inning, collecting the win for the Cardinals.

The 12th inning started with a lead-off single by Tyler Minges. After Minges was sacrificed to second base, Cody Haerther hit a ball back to the mound. Minges was caught in a rundown between first and second, and was eventually tagged out. With Haerther at first and two outs, Aaron Herr walked on four pitches, putting runners at first and second. Kevin Estrada then walked on five pitches to load the bases, setting up Boyd's game-winning grounder against losing pitcher Nate Hoelscher (1-1), ruled an RBI single.

The Cards got a two-run homer from Robinson Cancel in the first, his sixth of the year. They also got a two-run blast from Shaun Boyd in the second, his first career home run at the Double-A level. His first of two hits on the night, gave the Cards a 4-2 lead at the time. Cards starter Jordan Pals pitched well, going 5.2 innings, surrendering three runs on eight hits. Only two of the three runs were earned.

The Cardinals are now 7-2 on the home stand, and look to make it five out of six on Thursday night. Randy Leek (6-2) goes for Springfield on Thursday, while Wichita sends Derrin Ebert (2-1) to the hill. Game time on Thursday night at Hammons Field begins at 7:10pm. Gates open at 6:10pm and tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
