New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - John Anderson hurled five shutout innings to lead the Fisher Cats (44-50) to a 2-0 game two victory and a split of their doubleheader with Portland on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. Anderson recorded a season-high eight strikeouts to help the Fisher Cats earn their first win of the series while snapping a three-game slide.
After dropping the opener on Saturday, 5-2, the Fisher Cats came back strong in the nightcap thanks to Anderson and some Sea Dogs errors.
They scored a first-inning run thanks to a pair of Sea Dogs miscues. Jon Berti reached when his ground ball went through the legs of the third baseman, Michael Almanzar. Berti then stole second, and as he attempted to steal third the throw sailed into left field to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead.
The Fisher Cats took advantage of another error to grab a second run in the fifth. With two outs, Berti singled to third, but the throw to first by Almanzar was wild, allowing Berti to advance to second. Kevin Nolan followed with a two-out single to right to plate Berti for a 2-0 advantage.
That was enough for John Anderson (W; 2-1), who was brilliant in this third straight spot start. The lefty tossed five scoreless with a season-high eight strikeouts. He needed just 63 pitches, and allowed just one hit and one walk. Impressively, he started 14 of 17 batters with a first pitch strike. Gregory Infante pitched two scoreless with three Ks to record his 11th save.
Wilfredo Boscan (L;1-3) took a tough-luck loss for Portland allowing two unearned runs over 4.2 innings.
In the opener, the Sea Dogs took advantage of an erratic Radhames Liz (L; 2-2) to steal a 5-2 victory. The big inning for Portland came in the third with the Fisher Cats leading 1-0. They loaded the bases up before Shannon Wilkerson ripped a two-run single to left field for a 2-1 lead. They made it 4-1 when Liz hit consecutive batters with the bases full before eventually escaping the inning.
Liz pitched into the fifth inning, leaving with two outs for Randy Boone. He allowed a season-high five runs on eight hits, hitting three batters while striking out four.
Brian Johnson (W; 8-2) went the distance for Porrtland allowing just three hits in his second complete game. He allowed a Kevin Nolan double and an Andy Burns sac fly in the first. Michael Crouse's lead-off homer in the seventh - his third this week - capped the scoring at 5-2.
Game four of the series comes up at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon as lefty Richard Bleier takes the ball against Portland righty Mike McCarthy. Radio coverage begins at 12:45 with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home to begin an eight-game homestand after the All-Star Break on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. They'll open the homestand with four games against Portland featuring three Atlas Fireworks Shows and a Sunday hat giveaway. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by visiting the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
