Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - Ian Anderson matched a career high with 11 strikeouts as the Mississippi Braves (14-13) shut out the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (10-19) for their fourth straight win, 2-0 on Saturday night.
The rain-soaked crowd of 2,545 endured a 35-minute rain delay on Saturday night but were rewarded with another stellar performance by an M-Braves starting pitcher. Anderson, Jason Hursh, and Josh Graham combined for 14 strikeouts and the second shutout of the series and third for Mississippi over the past six games.
Anderson (W, 2-1), the No. 3 overall prospect for the Atlanta Braves made his first start after turning 21 on Thursday and delivered 6.0 shutout innings for a second straight start. Anderson gave up just a single in the second inning and fifth inning, retiring at one point 11-consecutive Jumbo Shrimp.
The M-Braves handed Anderson a lead in the fifth inning after four innings of scoreless baseball. Daniel Lockhart extended his hitting streak to four games with a single and then moved to third base on a perfectly executed hit-and-run off the bat of Carlos Martinez. The Braves' catcher found the vacated hole at second base to spark a scoring opportunity. Ray-Patrick Didder grounded out on the next pitch, but Lockhart scored to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead.
Martinez drew a two-out walk from Jacksonville starter Jorge Guzman (L, 1-3) in the seventh inning, forcing the Shrimp to go to their bullpen. Guzman, the No. 9 prospect for the Marlins suffered the loss despite a quality start. Didder greeted new pitcher Kolton Mahoney with a bloop single to center scoring Alejandro Salazar and Mississippi led 2-0.
Hursh (H, 1) took over for Anderson in the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless frame. Graham (S, 3) needed just 16 pitches (13 strikes) to shutout Jacksonville over the final two innings and earn the save. Graham struck out three.
The M-Braves will go for a five-game sweep of Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Prak. Atlanta Braves No. 13 overall prospect LHP Kyle Muller (0-1, 3.79) starts for the M-Braves opposite RHP Jordan Yamamoto (1-3, 5.04).
