Anderson Stellar Again As Canadians Blank Volcanoes

August 19, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Volcanoes Stadium - Keizer, OR) - Canadians LHP Kyle Anderson continued his stellar pitching in the month of August with 5 1/3 innings of shutout baseball on Sunday afternoon, leading Vancouver to a 3-0 victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the first game of a three-game series.

Anderson, who gave up six hits and one out but did not record a strikeout, improved his record to 4-2 with the win.

Back-to-back home runs by 3B Kellen Sweeney and 1B Balbino Fuenmayor with two outs in the top of the 6th inning gave the C's a 3-0 lead, which would prove to be more than enough for Vancouver in the victory.

The Canadians' first run of the contest also came with two outs. In the top of the 2nd inning, RF Matt Newman smacked a two-out single and came around to score on LF Dwight Smith Jr.'s RBI double for a 1-0 lead. For Smith Jr., it is his eighth RBI in 10 games with the Canadians.

Even though the Volcanoes managed seven hits, the quartet of LHP Kyle Anderson (5.1 IP), RHP Wil Browning (1.2 IP), RHP Eric Brown (1.0 IP), and Arik Sikula (1.0 IP) got the outs when it mattered the most, limiting Salem-Keizer to one hit in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Notes: RHP Wil Browning, who was assigned from Bluefield (Appalachian League) to the Canadians earlier on Sunday, made his C's debut against the Volcanoes and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings. Browning gave up one hit without a walk, and struck out one... With his 5.1 shutout innings, LHP Kyle Anderson lowered his ERA to 2.45 in the month of August (six earned runs over 22 innings pitched)... The shutout is the C's league-leading eighth of this Northwest League season...
