Norfolk Admirals News Release

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled goaltender John Gibson from their primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Norfolk Admirals. As a result, the Ducks have reassigned goaltender Jason LaBarbera to Norfolk.

Gibson, 21, heads back to the west coast after a win and a loss in net for the Admirals this past weekend. He saved 55 shots and gave up six goals in his two starts, rendering a 3.05 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage in almost 118 minutes between the pipes.

The Pittsburgh native played 45 games for the Admirals last season and raised a 21-17-4 record. He shined in the postseason when he saved 95.5 percent of the shots he faced and allowed only 1.45 goals-per-game in six contests before Anaheim used him in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Gibson recorded a shutout in his NHL playoff debut becoming the first goaltender to do so in league history. He returns to Orange County with a loss suffered in the Ducks' season opener versus Pittsburgh back on October 9.

LaBarbera, 34, a 15-year veteran of professional hockey, backed up former Admiral Frederik Andersen since last Wednesday's call-up to Anaheim. He signed with the Ducks over the summer as a serviceable veteran who could fill in for both Anaheim and Norfolk when needed to support three young netminders in Andersen, Gibson and Igor Bobkov.

Hailing from Burnaby, British Columbia, LaBarbera has 60 career wins in the NHL and 132 in the AHL. He's also won the AHL award for the league's best goaltender twice and the lowest goals-against average twice as well. The AHL named him its most valuable player in 2003-04 when he went 34-9-9 for the Hartford Wolf Pack.
