Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Thanks to another dominating pitching performance, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (23-12) defeated the Lake County Captains (12-22) 6-1 on Monday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. Jeff Ames surrendered just two hits in six shutout innings to improve to 4-0 in Education Day games at Bowling Green Ballpark this season. Joey Rickard led the way offensively with four runs batted in. The Hot Rods outscored the Captains 14-1 over the final two games of the series.
After Ames dealt a scoreless top of the first inning, the Hot Rods took the lead just two batters into their day at the plate. Andrew Toles began the bottom of the first inning with a double down the line in left field that was immediately followed by a Rickard single into left. Captain starter Ryan Merritt issued three straight walks before Bowling Green scored their second run of the inning on a Patrick Leonard sacrifice fly to left field.
With Ames continuing to roll along, the Hot Rods tallied three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two aboard and no outs, Rickard doubled home both runners to double the Hot Rods lead. Tommy Coyle also brought in a run in the inning on an RBI-groundout.
Ames, who lowered his season ERA to 1.22, finished with a career-high six innings pitched in a win for the second straight start. The Hot Rods are now 7-0 with Ames on the mound. Relievers Brandon Henderson and Nick Sawyer hurled the final three innings with the only blemish against Hot Rods pitchers coming in the top of the ninth on a Erik Gonzalez solo home run.
The win clinches a 3-2 homestand for the Hot Rods, who also clinched their fifth series win at Bowling Green Ballpark in 2013 in six tries.
Bowling Green starts a seven-game road trip on Tuesday night at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne with the first of a three-game series at 6:05 PM CDT. The Hot Rods will send LHP Blake Snell (1-3, 2.81) to the mound opposite the TinCaps RHP Joe Ross (3-0, 2.84). The Forever Communications Pregame Show with Hank Fuerst will begin at 5:35 PM CDT.
