Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The Fort Wayne TinCaps rallied with two runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to overcome a three-run deficit and defeat the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Monday, completing a sweep of the three-game series. The win was Fort Wayne's sixth straight as they improved to 22-13 on the season. The Dragons fell to 12-24 with the loss.
Fort Wayne's comeback against the Dayton bullpen spoiled a tremendous performance by Dayton starting pitcher Robert Stephenson, who was dominant for the second straight start. Stephenson did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and walked no one over the course of his outing, striking out seven. He allowed one unearned run in six innings on two hits and left the game with a 4-1 lead. Over Stephenson's last two starts, he has struck out 16 and walked no one over 12 innings, allowing only five hits and one unearned run.
Fort Wayne's Brian Adams drilled a two-run home run off Dragons reliever Wandy Peralta (0-4) in the seventh to tie the game, and the TinCaps added two more against Peralta in the eighth for the lead. Gabriel Quintana's sacrifice fly brought in the tie-breaking run from third to give the TinCaps their first lead of the night in the top of the eighth, and the Dragons offense did not put a man on base over the final two innings.
Dayton's Seth Mejias-Brean delivered a two-out, two-run single in the first inning to give the Dragons an early 2-0 lead. After Fort Wayne plated an unearned run against Stephenson in the top of the sixth, the Dragons answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Mejias-Brean drove in one run with a long sacrifice fly and the other scored on Joe Hudson's two-out RBI single.
The Dragons finished with six hits in the game. Hudson had two hits and Mejias-Brean picked up three RBI to lead the attack.
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto will start for the Dragons on Tuesday night on a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment when the Dragons host the West Michigan Whitecaps. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the start of a three-game series. Cueto threw 51 pitches in his first rehab assignment for the Dragons last Thursday and is expected to increase that number tomorrow. West Michigan will counter with Yorfrank Lopez (3-1, 5.01). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
