Amerks sign defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick

(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Americans General Manager Jody Gage announced today that the Amerks have signed Irondequoit native Rory Fitzpatrick. The defenseman rejoins Rochester after playing 60 games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres in 2003-04.

In a related move, Rochester signed defenseman Sylvain Dufresne to a two-way contract and loaned him to Toledo of the East Coast Hockey League. Dufresne played in 28 games with the Amerks and recorded two assists.

Fitzpatrick, 30, returns for his third stint with the Amerks. He spent parts of the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons in Rochester, playing in 101 games and recording 28 points (9+19). During his two seasons in Rochester, he was twice named the co-winner of the team's McCulloch Trophy for community service. In 2002-03, he also served as one of the team's alternate captains.

The graduate of Rochester Youth Hockey is in his 10th season of professional hockey and has played in 548 games. The 6-1, 205-pound defenseman has also played in 154 NHL games with teams in Buffalo, Montreal, St. Louis and Nashville.

Fitzpatrick played junior hockey with the Sudbury Wolves (OHL), where he collected 118 points (28+90) in 179 regular season games. During the 1994-95 postseason, Fitzpatrick scored three goals and added 15 assists (3+15) in 18 playoff games with the Wolves.

He was originally the Montreal Canadiens' second-round selection (47th overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Fitzpatrick would see his first professional action with the Fredericton Canadiens (AHL), during the team's run to the Calder Cup Finals in 1994-95 season. The following season, Fitzpatrick made his leap to the NHL, appearing in 42 games with Montreal. After time with in the St. Louis and Nashville organizations, Fitzpatrick signed as a free agent with the Sabres on August 14, 2001.
