Americans to Make Selection in 2022 CHL Import Draft

June 30, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release

The Tri-City Americans will look overseas on Friday as they take part in the Canadian Hockey League's 2022 Import Draft. The annual draft gives teams from all three CHL leagues (the Western Hockey League, and Ontario Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) an opportunity to select the rights to players outside of North America.

The two-round draft will take place online with the order of selection rotating through each of the CHL's three leagues. The WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers hold the number one pick, followed by the OHL's Saginaw Spirit and the QMJHL's Cape Breton Eagles.

Each CHL team is allowed a maximum of two import players selected through the CHL Import Draft.

Goaltender Tomas Suchanek (2020 CHL Import Draft, ninth overall) and forward Petr Moravec (2021 CHL Import Draft, 57th overall) were the two import players on Tri-City's roster for the 2021-22 season. It was announced today that Moravec has signed a contract with Mountfield HK in his hometown of Hradec Králové, Czechia and will not be returning to Tri-City for the 2022-23 season.

With room for one more import player on the roster, the Americans will select once in tomorrow's draft at 4th overall.

The inaugural CHL Import Draft took place in 2001. Through the past 20 years the Americans have made 28 selections. The 28 import players include 11 from Czechia, seven from Russia, four from Slovakia, two from Belarus, two from and Sweden, and one from each Norway and Finland.

Over the years Tri-City has used their import draft picks to select 15 forwards, 11 defensemen, and two goaltenders.

The Americans have a recent trend with five of their past six import selections hailing from Czechia: Petr Moravec (57th overall, 2021), Tomas Suchanek (ninth overall, 2020), Jan Cikhart (31st overall, 2019), David Homola (91st overall, 2019), Krystof Hrabik (41st overall, 2018).

Fans can follow the draft live on the WHL website. It will take place tomorrow Friday, July 1 at 8:00 AM PDT.
