Americans Stuck in a Funk in Loss to Cougars

Zac Funk recorded a natural hat trick to lead the Prince George Cougars to a 4-1 victory over the Ams tonight at the Toyota Center.

Tri-City opened scoring 6:45 into the game as Jordan Gavin scored with a quick shot from the left circle. The 17-year-old leads the Ams with 12 goals and 29 points this season.

The Ams held their one-goal lead for most of the game. With less than a minute remaining in the second period, Zac Funk scored top-shelf with a between-the-legs shot to even the score at one. After two periods of play, the Americans trailed shots 26-18.

The game remained tied until late in the game. With Andrew Fan in the penalty box for kneeing, Prince George took the lead with another power play goal from Funk. The 20-year-old forward went on to add an empty net goal for the Cougars to complete a natural hat trick.

Riley Heidt also added an empty net goal, giving the Cougars a final 4-1 victory.

Lukas Matecha had another outstanding performance in net for the Americans. The first-year goaltender from Czechia made a career-high 39 saves on 41 shots.

The Americans were held scoreless on the power play as they went 0/4 with a man-advantage tonight.
